Message from Austria to Master
I am dead but I will try to hold on by attacking Italy
and getting my centers back.
Message from England to Master
That last move went very well for me, but now I have a whole new
opportunity to look stupid. Ah, the magic of Dip. What will France
do? He can guarantee the recapture of bel and a build and not let Germany
into bur with bur-bel supported twice followed up with gas-bur and
mao-spa. He could also probably get a build and a nice alliance with
Germany by playing eng-lon, mao-iri, etc letting Germany keep bel.
eng-lon does risk me bouncing him whereas the bur-bel option is foolproof,
but he can be fairly certain I won't defend lon. It really comes down to
the kind of player he is. I think he wants a solid alliance and I hope he
will take the attitude that I haven't attacked him. My thinking may be
influenced by the fact that I really, really don't want to take time to
safeguard London when I can pick up a second build instead. I could try
safeguarding London while slipping into Kiel. If nth-lon bounces, I'm fine
- well, if you don't count the FG alliance I'd be facing. If nth-lon
succeeds, I suspect I'd be facing a fleet in the North Sea.
The safe option for me if I don't protect lon is to take Denmark by force -
Holland can only be forced from the North Sea and I don't want to give up
that space - and be assured of at least one build. If France attacks me
instead of Germany, then Germany stays at five and France builds another
fleet in bre. If I protect lon and France attacks Germany, Germany stays
steady, France builds one, but this time probably a fleet in mar or an army
in par. I may even get that 2nd build if I outguess Germany.
I have a history of getting into trouble by overplaying positions like
this. I think this time, I'll play it safe, nth-lon, try to slip into Kiel
and if Russia and Germany gang up to kick me out of Sweden (I don't expect
that to happen), hope that den is available for a retreat. I may change my
mind though, it goes against my tendency to play aggressively when an
opportunity comes up.
Elsewhere, I was disappointed to see Austria disband. In his position, I'd
be doing all I could to take Italy down with me. As it stands, Italy,
Russia and Turkey all gain. It probably doesn't matter all that much as
Italy will be overrun fairly quickly and it may even help me as the next
Russian build could well be an army in Warsaw that gets tossed at
Germany. It may help in the short-run anyway. Longer term, Russia and
Turkey are being given a very easy-to-play Jug where either they roll the
board or one makes a devastating stab on the other and rolls the board
himself. It is something to keep an eye on.
Message from France to Master
Have to wonder about A Trieste DISBAND. My guess is that Austria got
mixed up and thought it was fall, so he could rebuild it. I've done that
once. Felt pretty dumb after I realized it was only spring...
That does get the east resolved pretty quickly, but it doesn't affect my
short term moves too much. The interesting question will be RT vs. I or
RI vs. T (or IT vs. R). My guess would be a continuation of the
Juggernaught, since it is no-press and harder to coordinate changes and
such.
I plan on taking Belgium, hoping England takes Holland (or at least
doesn't support Belgium). I move to Spa(sc) not so much to be
anti-Italian, but to ensure Mun-Bur bounces (leaving F Mao the only unit
to pick up Spain). I suppose I could order it to Spa/nc, but I really
don't like F Spa(nc) - it's just so out of place. I hope that Italy with
his at least 1 and maybe 2 builds doesn't build a couple of fleets and
come west. He's got to be concerned with Turkey though so I suppose I'm
pretty safe for now.
I did consider Pic-Lon, but the risk of it bouncing is too high at this
point.
Message from Germany to Master
Obviously I can't hold everything -- may be wasting my time supporting Bel with Hol since France can attack with 3 units, but on the other hand he may be tempted to use F ENG to help convoy A Gas to Wal. Similarly, England could stage a supported attack on Den, but I doubt he will, given the Russian threat to Nwy and the French threat to Lon. So what's left is to try to ensure that England doesn't make a grab for Kie (and also keep anyone from sneaking into Mun), while covering Den in a minimal fashion
. Not ideal, but with a small amount of luck I may hold Bel and be in better shape after building an additional unit.
Message from Italy to Master
Well, my tactic instincts have worked and I got Tri at
my first attempt. Things may get complicated, though.
Russia has entered well into Austrian territory with a
sizeable force and it looks like I will have a hard
time hindering his further advance. If he allies with
T it seems I will be doomed.
Was I wrong to attack Austria, then? Perhaps; I'm
afraid that my build in Rome was a mistake because it
looked too anti Austrian, so no surprise was possible.
After all, I had not attacked Austria in 1901 so a
more neutral-looking build might have prompted him to
offer some resistance against Russia in the North.
Unlike me, Russia will hold at least two Austrian
centres (Bud & Vie, plus possibly Ser) without
dislodging a single Austrian unit, and without having
to face an Austrian attempt to regain them!
Apparently I am forced to go after the Russian. Russia
and Italy are usualy in good terms, but seldom do they
get so close and so early in the game. Is there a way
for me to try and prevent this sudden rain of white
units?
If I were th Tzar I might order
A Gal - Vie
A Bud S A Rum - Ser / A Bud S A Gal - Vie
A Rum - Ser
F Sev - Rum
It seems I need a supported move into Vie in order to
effectively negate one of the potential Russian
builds. It might mean I do not keep Tri, but I think
stopping Russia is the priority now, and hopefuly I'll
get the build anyway...
Message from Russia to Master
This is the turning point for me. With Austria nearly gone,
Turkey has to decide between moving against me or
against Italy. The unit taking Greece should make it clear.
As for Austria, I'm taking his decision to disband instead
of retreating to Vienna as a request of help from me.
Since IT vs R is possible in the short term, his army in Alb
would be usefull as a distraction and I will not force the
entry into Vienna.
So, here's what I will do:
- fin-swe & stp s nwy [ To make friend and signal my goal]
- gal-vie [to bounce Tyr-Vie while Austria cut Tri's support]
- bud-ser, rum s bud-ser & sev-bla [ready for T's decision]
